Obituary for Sherman O. Nelson

Sherman O. Nelson, age 88, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011 at Luther Midelfort Chippewa Valley in Bloomer with his loving wife and family by his side. He was born September 22, 1922 in the town of Wilson in Dunn County to Otto and Kristofa (Larson) Nelson. He served proudly in the European Theater during WWII from December 18, 1942 to December 27, 1945. While in the service he received the Purple Heart and the Silver Star and later suffered greatly from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After returning home he married Luvern Dodge in Pine City MN on February 22, 1947. Luverne passed away on February 15, 1978 while living in the Chetek area. Sherman later married Joyce (Cole) Elwood on June 21, 1980. He worked as a supervisor at Abbot Laboratories in Chicago for numerous years. He also farmed, worked for Jerome’s and did carpentry work. Sherman enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, dancing, snow skiing and traveling.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce of Bloomer; two sons: Gregory (Judy) Nelson of Pleasant Prairie WI and Reed (Margo) Nelson of Winthrop Harbor IL; two step-children: Daniel (Judy) Elwood of Bloomer and Darla (Brian) Butterfield of New Auburn; one sister: Hope Mueller of Kenosha; eight grandchildren: Scott, Tracie, Sherry, Kerry, Charles, Rene, Sarah & Amy; five step-grandchildren: Drew, Brett, Derek, Erica and Jared; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Luvern; one sister: Eunice Diggs.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer with Chaplain Ann Marie Swanson and David Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Chetek where there will be graveside military Rites performed by the New Auburn American Legion. Friends may call from 11:00 AM until the time of service on Monday at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the New Auburn American Legion or Northwest Home Care Hospice.
