Bloomer Muriel Alice (Mayo) Custer, age 98, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. She passed away peacefully, with her family gathered around her at the Atrium Health Care Center, Bloomer, WI. Muriel was born on July 8, 1918 in the Township of Union, Eau Claire County; the daughter of John Harold and Alice E. (Rossow) Mayo. She graduated from Eau Claire High School, attended Dunn County Normal Teacher’s Training and taught in a local one room rural school for 5 years. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at the age of 8 at the front pew of First Baptist Church in Eau Claire under the teaching of Pastor Ralph Barry, her uncle. On June 3, 1941, she married Ernest L. Custer at First Baptist Church in Eau Claire. In 1943, they purchased the farm house, buildings and acreage in Wheaton Township that continues today as Custer Farms. Muriel was an amazing woman giving constant testimony to the faithfulness of God in her life. Through her life as teacher, homemaker, bookkeeper, wife, mother and friend she selflessly cared for the needs of others. She gave generously to those near and far whenever she was aware of a need. Her greatest legacy is found in her children and grandchildren who are involved in various Christian ministries, business endeavors, or other substantive works throughout the world whether formally or informally. She loved to read, write notes of encouragement, and to quilt. And, in her final years, as her sight had dimmed, she loved to visit in person or by phone with any and all of her family. She was loved and tenderly cared for by staff throughout her 5 years of residence at the Atrium Health Center’s Rose Garden, CBRF and Nursing Home; for this, the family is most grateful.
Muriel is survived by her seven children: Jean (Roger) Johnson of Fridley, MN; William (Louise) Custer of Jim Falls; Kathryn (David) Belden of Montrose, CA; Susan (Eldon) Carlson of Bloomer; Robert (Roberta) Custer of Woodstock, OH; Kenneth (Debora) Custer of Elk Mound; and Debra (Randell) Cramer of Federal Way, WA; one sister-in-law Elizabeth (Babe) Morning of Bloomer; 25 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents John and Alice Mayo; her husband of 57 years, Ernest; brothers: William and Harold Mayo; sisters: Lillian Lone, Gladys Holman, Marian Krammes, and Phyllis Mayo; one grandson: Gabriel Custer.
