Mavis J. Babbitt

Mavis J. Babbitt, 98, of Eau Claire died Friday, May 22 at home.

Mavis June was born June 26, 1927 in Tilden, Wis., to Elmer and Alice (Bekken) Steinmetz. When Elmer passed away in 1930, she lived with her mother, brothers and grandparents on the Bekken family farm until Alice married George Kressin. Mavis graduated from Bloomer High School in 1944 and married Dale Babbitt in 1946.

Mavis perfectly fulfilled her calling as a mother to four sons. Her boys were active in sports and she was in the bleachers for every event. She was an incredible cook and would often stay up to bake cookies after the kids went to sleep. She loved music and especially enjoyed hearing her sons and husband sing.

A proud Norwegian, she was also active in her church. She scored two holes-in-one as an avid golfer and for years held the Chippewa Falls Women’s record high series bowling score.

She is preceded in death by her husband; an infant son; grandchildren Betsy and Ben Babbitt; daughter-in-law Debby Lofthus Babbitt; brothers Wayne and Elmer "Amy" Steinmetz; and niece Mary Helen Bushnell.

She is survived by four sons: Barry (Fran) of West Bloomfield, Mich., Steve (Linda) of Parker, Colo., Don of Eau Claire and Dean (Sue Ann) of Summerfield, Fla.; six grandchildren: Katie (Dan) Guite, and Mark (Becky), David (Lara), James, Andrew, and Blaire (Travis) Babbitt; five great-grandchildren: Sam and Rachel Guite and Brenden, Mallory and Luke Babbitt; and sister Jean Lewis (neé Kressin).

A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, May 30 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1800 Jackson St., Bloomer with visitation beginning at 10am. A luncheon will follow at White Pine Pavilion. The service will be live streamed on the Our Savior’s Lutheran in Bloomer facebook page.
