Obituary for Mary B. Asplund

Mary Burlingame Barlow Asplund, age 88, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire on November 28, 2016. She was born on September 26, 1928, in Sharon, Conn. She was the 7th child born to Henry and Gladys Barlow of South Amenia, New York. Mary attended Webatuck grade school and Dover Plains High School. Helping on the farm in the summer time and also with her mother with cooking and canning.

In 1945 she went to Minneapolis to stay with her sister Alcy, whose husband was in the Navy and deployed. Alcy had 4 children and needed help. Mary finished high school in Edina and went to college at the University of Minnesota. She met the love of her life (Merne) at the university and they were married in South Amenia, New York in August of 1950. Merne finished med school and had to put in time as a physician in the Air Force so they lived in Texas and Kansas for two years.

Dr. Hudak, a physician in Bloomer, wanted to retire and sold his medical practice to Merne and Mary, so in June of 1955 they moved to Bloomer and lived here the rest of their lives.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gladys Barlow, her husband: Merne, her daughter: Cindy Asplund Mitchell, her granddaughter: Allison Asplund,a baby Tom who died in child birth; brothers and sisters: Alcy (Chet) Noreen, Jane (Ken) Howard, Ruthie, Bill (Doris) and Robert (Dorothy) Barlow.

She is survived by 3 children: Terry (Richard) Dwyer, Mark (Carrie) and Matt (Penni) Asplund; 10 grandchildren: Eric (Michelle) Mitchell, Julia (David) Hipke, Tim (Leanne) Zorich, Mike (Sara) Zorich, Katleyn (Adeem) Osman, Martin Asplund, Matthew (Mandi) Asplund, Mitchell Asplund, Merne William (Kris Shehan) Asplund, and Karlien Asplund; son in-law: Mark Mitchell. As of now Mary has 11 great-grandchildren, Gabbie, Olivia and Claire Zorich, Zach and Gavin Zorich, Zain Osman, Lucas Jacob and Ben Mitchell, Sophia and Joshua Hipke and one more child that is due in February to Katelyn and Adeem.

Mary was deeply loved by her family and friends.

There will be a visitation at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer from 1:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, December 3, 2016, followed by the funeral held at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 4:30 PM. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made out to the Bloomer Food Pantry. Online condolences can be expressed at olsonfuneralhomebloomer.com
