Obituary for James Marlin Dahl

James M. Dahl, age 83, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at his home. He was born December 13, 1924 in Bloomer to Glen & Ida (Donner) Dahl. He married Barbara “Betty” Hudek on September 13, 1947 in Bloomer. He served in the Marines during WWII and was wounded when he was part of the third wave of marines to land on Iwo Jima. After returning from the war, he studied forestry in Montana and then moved back to Wisconsin where he worked at a lumberyard. Eventually he became a mail carrier and the Postmaster in New Auburn. Jim was a conservationist at heart and was the representative for Chippewa County on the Trout Committee Conservation Congress for nearly 50 years, a member of the Chippewa County Board for over 16 years, a member of the committee that developed the Quality of Life fund to buy County Forest land and was a member of the Duncan Creek Citizen’s Advisory Committee. He served on the panel that negotiated with Xcel Energy to relicense the Lake Wissota Dam and helped to make a 100-acre nature area from the former county farm. He was a member of the Independent Lutheran Church in Sand Creek, the New Auburn American Legion # 367 and the New Auburn Fish & Game Club. He enjoyed fishing, cross-country skiing, being outdoors, dancing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife: Betty of New Auburn; one son: Stephen Dahl (Georganne Hunter) of Duluth MN; two daughters: Sandra (Wayne) Seefeldt of Altoona & Stacy (Tom) Engesether of Roberts WI; 3 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Peder Dahl.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude’s Church in New Auburn with Pastor Robert Koepp officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery, Town of Woodmohr, Chippewa County with graveside military rites performed by the New Auburn American Legion. Friends may call from 10:00 �" 11:00 AM on Tuesday at St. Jude’s Church in New Auburn. There will be no visitation Monday evening. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is in charge of arrangements.
