Henry E. Vaughn, age 86, passed away at the Chippewa Veteran’s Home in Chippewa Falls on Thursday, June 20, 2013. He was born November 21, 1926 near Lake City AR to John Earl and Nancy Belle (Whitney) Vaughn. He went to South Dakota in 1944 to work harvesting the fields. There he met Gloria Papka who he married on May 2, 1945. In WWII, Henry served in the Pacific Theatre in the 1st Calvary, 43rd Infantry, Battery B, 99th Field Artillery. In the Philippines, he was a combat radio operator working with a Navajo code talker and then he was a part of the occupation army in Japan.
Henry loved his family and the land. He and Gloria farmed in South Dakota until 1980 when they moved to Wisconsin and farmed near Bloomer. They recently celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary and enjoyed recalling all of the good times they have had. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Nancy; seven brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife: Gloria of Bloomer; one son: Bill (Alice) Vaughn; one daughter: Karen (Lewie) Scherff; five grandchildren: Micky (Gwen) Vaughn, Jen (Clint) Hurt, Gina (Brad) Anderson, Anne (Dan) Erickson and Heidi Vaughn; 13 great-grandchildren: Peyton, Parker and Piper Vaughn, Brennan and Kenzie Hurt, Buddy Mattila, Cally and John Anderson, Jack and Emma Gallagher, Katie Marie, Morgan and Gabe Vaughn.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer. Interment will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Spooner. Friends may call from 5:00 – 7:00 on Sunday at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
