Obituary for Gladys Schroetter

Gladys Schroetter, age 92, passed away Monday, April 19, 2010 at The Maple Wood in Bloomer. She was born on March 30, 1918 at home in Bloomer to John & Pauline (Stolt) Proue. She was the third child, having two older sisters and one younger brother. She also had a brother, Norbert, who passed away shortly after birth. Cecelia, known as Tudy, was the oldest, followed by Irma, Gladys and little brother, Eugene. For many years Tudy, Irma and Gladys were known as the BIG THREE, because wherever one was, the other two could be found there also.

Gladys was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer and was a member there her entire life. She attended grade school and high school in Bloomer. After graduation, she worked in a bakery in Menomonie (no wonder she was such a good baker!) and also at the dry cleaners in Bloomer. On September 10, 1941 Gladys Proue and Marvin Schroetter were united in marriage. Gladys & Marvin owned the Ideal Theatre on Main Street in Bloomer and for sixteen years owned the Bloomer Bowl. Throughout her life Gladys enjoyed playing cards, knitting, crocheting, making beaded Christmas ornaments going to the cottage at Ax-handle Lake, bowling with the women’s and mixed couples leagues and spending lots of time with her family and friends. Her door was always open, the coffee pot on and delicious goodies were waiting to be served with a good dose of friendly conversation. The last five years of her life she lived at the Maple Wood where she enjoyed playing bingo and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by two daughters: Suzette “Susie” (Dennis) Zwiefelhofer of Bloomer and Janice (Lee “Stub”) Naset of Bloomer; one son: Hal (Peggy) Schroetter of Menomonie; seven grandchildren: Tim (Stephanie) Zwiefelhofer, Mike (Kathy) Zwiefelhofer, Garret (Kari) Zwiefelhofer, Lisa (Ted) Goettl, Scott Naset, Andy (Shay) Schroetter & Phil (Shannon) Schroetter; five great-grandchildren: Linsey, Nicholas, Olivia, Trey & Skylar; special K-9 companions, Leo & Ms. Elle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Marvin; two brothers: Norbert in infancy & Eugene Proue; two sister: Irma Proue & Cecelia Ellingson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:00 Am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer with Rev. Hal Schroetter and Rev. Bruce Rimmereid officiating. Interment will be in the Bloomer Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 on Thursday at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer where the Women of the Moose will have a memorial service at 7:30 PM. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
