Obituary for George Sutor Sr.

George Sutor, Sr., age 68, passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. He was born September 14, 1942 in Philadelphia PA to Andrew and Evelyn (Mehl) Sutor. He married Susan Todahl on April 18, 1970 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. “Gorgeous” George, a name given to him by his father, was the second oldest of seven children and grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. His father died when George was in his teens, leaving the raising of the family to his mother. He would be the first to tell you what an amazing job his mother did and that his family meant more than the world to him. George was an outstanding athlete, playing with the Philadelphia Eagle’s and the Globetrotter’s as well as several other ABA teams. He enjoyed his days bartending at Maloneys in Margate, located on the Jersey shore. In 1997, “Gorgeous” and Sue moved to Lake Holcombe to purchase Swede’s from Sue’s parents. Sue told him that if, after a year’s trial, he didn’t like it they could return to New Jersey. He more than liked it and loved being the owner and operator of Big Swede’s Resort on Lake Holcombe. He was a phenomenal promoter and worked hard to make Big Swede’s the successful business it is. He was an active part of the community being a member of the Lake Holcombe Lions, the Lake Holcombe Business and Resort Association, the Chippewa County Tavern League and the Entwood Men’s Golf League. George was extremely patriotic, decorating the bar and resort area with reminders of what our country should mean to us. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and was a huge sports fan, especially the Packers and the Eagles. His friendly smile and robust personality will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife: Sue of Lake Holcombe; one son: Michael Sutor of Onalaska; four brothers: Andrew (Virginia) Sutor of Margate NJ, Robert (Nancy) Sutor of Margate NJ, Edward (Christine) Sutor of Ventnor NJ and James (Patricia) Sutor of Lindwood NJ; mother-in-law: Jean Todahl of Eleva WI; two sisters-in-law: Carol Sutor of Ventnor NJ and Martha Rando of Lindwood NJ; numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Joseph Sutor; one son: George Jr. and his father-in-law: Orville Todahl.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 6:00 PM at East Bay Resort on Lake Holcombe. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until the time of service at East Bay.
