She was born on a small farm on the north end of Island Lake WI on December 27, 1917, the daughter of Edward and Mae (Kern) King. As an infant, she moved to Ferndale Lodge on Chain Lake where her parents managed the Ferndale Rod and Gun Club. In March of 1926, they bought Burke’s Resort and moved there across the ice with horses and sleds. The resort was renamed Old Timer’s Resort and remained in the family for fifty years. Dolly married Bruno Zucollo on August 13, 1939 and they had one son, Larry. During their marriage they lived in Adams Friendship and Chilton WI. On August 30, 1958 she married Charles Engel at the Old Timer’s Resort. After residing in Chicago for a short time, they purchased the resort and managed it until 1976. After selling the resort to Arrowhead Bible Camp, they divided their time between their Chain Lake and Dundee, Florida homes. After Charles passed away in 1993, Dolly returned to the home on Chain Lake which was her favorite place to be. Eventually she moved into the Duncan Road Apartments in Bloomer. For a number of years she volunteered extensively at the Maple Wood Nursing Home and the Senior Civic Center where she was nicknamed “White Lightning”.
