Obituary for Dorothy L. Boese

Dorothy Lydia (Rihn) Boese, 98, passed away at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Joyce Boese, near Wasilla, Alaska, on May 12, 2016, from natural causes. Dorothy, born Feb. 2, 1918, on the family farm in Cooks Valley, near Bloomer, Wis., was the seventh of eight children of Charles and Louisa (Hickethier) Rihn. Dorothy married Carl Boese on June 2, 1936, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomer, where she had been confirmed and attended all her life before she and Carl retired and moved to Cherokee Village, Ark. They were married for 50 years before his death in 1987. Dorothy moved to Homosassa, Fla., for 18 years and after the death of her companion, Robert Darragh, moved to an apartment at Wasilla Alaska Senior Campus in 2005, to be near her children. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Gilbert, Herbert, Albert, Melvin, Gertrude Kelm and Erma Steinmetz. She is survived by her daughters, Deanna (Larry) McAllister and Dorene (Richard) Eckman; son, Donald (Joyce) Boese; grandchildren. Dr. Christine Boese, Tim (Bia) Boese, Lee (Kim) McAllister, Carrie (Jack) McAllister, Darcy (Don) McAllister, Wendy (Scott) Englehardt and Mandy (Scott) Jennings; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Madison, Erin, Jason, Kathleen, Chance, Danielle, Gabriel, Aaron, Austin, Ashlee, Anthea and Lydia; and one great-great-granddaughter, Bailey. Dorothy is also survived by her sister, Margie (Rihn) Melberg; and many nieces and nephews; as well as Robert (Lee) Darragh; Mary (John) Schmidt; and special friends, Skip and Debbie Christensen. During her lifetime Dorothy worked several jobs, but her favorite was as Pharmacy Assistant at Bloomer Hospital for 16 years. She was an active member of the Lutheran churches wherever she lived, a member of the Elks Club and a 50 year member of Eastern Star. Dorothy enjoyed playing piano accordion in a family band, traveling, playing golf, bowling and playing cards. She made many friends wherever she resided and especially enjoyed her 11 years of good friends while living in her apartment at the Wasilla Senior Campus.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 1:00 PM with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
