Doris J. (Broten) Gates, age 89, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Country Terrace in Bloomer, Wisconsin. She was born June 4, 1928 in Rice Lake to Alfred and Zelpha (Hager) Broten. She married Clarence “Tex” Gates in 1953 in Pine City MN and together they moved to LaCerne Valley California. They moved to Rice Lake and lived there from 1961 – 1964 and then in Cameron from 1964 – 1977. After living in Elk Mound, Menomonie and Rice Lake, Doris ended up in Bloomer. She worked as a dispatcher for the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department for sixteen years. She enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino, playing cards (especially with her grandkids), discussing politics with her oldest son, and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by three sons: Richard (Rosilyn “Roz”) Gates of Cornell, Kelly (Sally) Gates of Menomonie and Steven (Becky) Gates of Elk Mound WI; daughter: Kathryn (Roger) Stodola of Chippewa Falls; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Fred and Zelpha Broten; husband: Clarence in 1981; daughter: Patricia Johnson; sisters: Irma Nelson, Nora Tinney, Inez Klingholtz, Ann Krogstad and Ella Beranek; brothers: Don, Harvey “Ted”, Orville “Red”, William “Bill”, Jens, Lloyd and Francis “Brick” Broten.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is assisting the family.
