Dale Duane Westerback, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Milestone Assisted Living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Dale was born on December 14, 1934, in Cromwell, Minnesota to Harry and Hilda (Heikkila) Westerback. He was raised in Superior, Wisconsin along with his brother Lloyd and sister June. His 6’ 6” height served him well on the basketball court. After high school, he enrolled in the US Army and was stationed in El Paso, Texas for two years. After being honorable discharged, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he majored in education. During his time at the university, he also worked at the Superior Rail Yard, which he continued doing in the summers of his first few years of teaching. During this time, he met and married Anita Bergren on January 19, 1959. They happily welcomed 2 children, Andrew and Ann.
Dale taught Biology at Bloomer High School for 37 years, coached men's and women's basketball, as well as women’s golf at various times throughout his career. After retirement, Dale and Anita ran Westies Yogurt Express Wagon for seven years. They traveled to local fairs and events while also spending winters down South and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Dale was a member of the Bloomer Masonic Lodge. He liked to play cribbage and bridge, watch the Packers and go to weekly coffee meetings with the guys. He will be remembered for his kindness, work ethic and love of family.
Dale is survived by his daughter: Ann; granddaughter Emily; numerous nieces, one nephew and many great, good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Anita; son: Andrew, brother: Lloyd (Sing); sister: June.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to noon on Friday June 5, 2026 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bloomer with the funeral service at Noon. Burial will take place at the Scandinavian cemetery in the town of Woodmohr. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at olsonfuneralhomebloomer.com
