Curtis N. Haugestuen, age 84, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Oakwood Health Services in Altoona after spending most of his life in Chetek WI. He was born July 22, 1933 in Dallas WI to Knute and Alma (Dalen) Haugestuen. He was baptized, confirmed and married in the New Scandinavian Lutheran Church in Dallas WI. Curt attended Washington Irving Grade School, completed two years at Barron High School and graduated from Chetek High School in 1951. He attended Brown Institute in Minneapolis MN for radio repair. He volunteered for the US Army and served in active duty during the Korean War from 1952 – 1954 in radio communications on the 38th parallel. On May 31, 1954, he married Yvonne Stuckert. They enjoyed 64 years together.
Curt worked as an Iron Ore Sampler in Eveleth, Iron Mountain and Virginia, MN. He worked on Peterson Truck Farms in Racine WI, was a field inspector, and was instrumental in starting the first bulk milk route at Falls Dairy in Sand Creek WI. Curt owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. He was a founding member of the first 4-H Horse project in Barron County where he was a 4-H leader for 20 years. Curt was a member of the American Legion and served on the Dovre town board. As a hobby he trained and showed registered quarter horses. Curt loved showing horses both with his children and then later watching his grandchildren at state fairs, rodeos and horse shows. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in High School and Collegiate Sports. Curt and Yvonne spent over 10 winters in Arizona camping and riding horses and mules in the Superstition and Santa Catalina Mountains. Hunting big game out west was something he felt privileged to do.
He is survived by his wife: Yvonne of Chetek; 3 children: Kevin (Portia) of Dallas WI, Kirk (Julie) of Barron and Shelly (Bart) Olson of Chetek. 7 grandchildren: Christine Prevost of Sydney MT, Karl (Leanne)Halling of Baldwin, Hannah (Bronson) Thalacker of Chetek, Emily (Jacob) Doro of Gilman, Austin Haugestuen of Sioux Falls SD, Mitch (Katie) Olson of LaCrosse, Ali Olson of DeKalb, IL and 6 great-grandchildren; brother: Merlin (Pat) Haugestuen, sister: Ardell (Jim) Nelson.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Knute and Alma Haugestuen, brother: Warren (Carol); niece Pam Zuidgeest, brothers in-law Jim Stuckert and Burton Carlson.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer with a visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 before the service.
